** The Copyright, Fun and Profit
In general, the instructional question files you create
can be uploaded with no problem. Currently, copyright
exists as the result of creation of the file. You did it,
so it's yours. Create does not mean copy.
Copying is permitted if the part copied is a minor part
of the work and proper citation is made. Minor and proper
are both murky. If in doubt send a sample to the publisher
and ask for specific permission and citation instructions.
FUN
Share a completed question file. Let others review and
edit it. When you feel you have a good file, upload it.
This is education reform by student helping student.
After downloading a question file, edit it for your own
course. If you have made corrections, upload the file. If
you have made major changes, things get murky again. If the
author has made no claims of reward, upload "your" question
file while citing the original author and file name.
In time there will be good instructional question files
for just about any topic or mental skill that can be reduced
to descriptive terms. This includes course, regional and
special examinations and assessments. These files can be
distributed and updated by students, teachers, disk vendors
and Bulletin Board Services (BBSes).
PROFIT
At lower levels of thinking, possession is ownership.
At higher levels of thinking, a person benefiting from
someone else's labor recognizes that fact by a note, or
some gratuity, tip or required payment.
Until some other system develops, a tip of $1 to $5 is
suggested for a useful question file, if appropriate. Now
this cuts out some of the FUN. You cannot edit such a file
and put your name on it without permission from the original
author.
The above is not to be confused with the recovery of
development and distribution costs for collections of
question files or for programs. Disk vendors, BBSes, and
programers charge for their services to pay their bills.
Disk vendors and BBSes recognize two types of software
distribution: Public Domain and Shareware. Public Domain
requires no payment for use. All individual question files
released by Nine-Patch Software are public domain.
Shareware can be freely copied, but not freely used.
Shareware is "try before you buy" or "register if found
useful". Nine-Patch Software programs are shareware and
require registration when found useful.
